Seeing is Essential
We envision spreading 20-20 vision with our eye health program
In its post-war recovery period, Sierra Leone was hit with another heart-wrenching challenge. E-bola hit. It is a debilitating disease, even more contagious than Covid. Close to 4000 people died, and others were left debilitated with post-Ebola eye complications.
In response to the eye damage caused by E-bola, we opened an eye treatment and eye health education program in 2015. At first, our focus was on those afflicted by post-ebola syndrome but now, under the skilled leadership of our ophthalmological nurse Stephen Jambawai, we treat a range of eye health issues in Taiama and the neighboring villages. Common eye problems range from myopia to river blindness to infections to cataracts.

Nurse Stephen provides eye-care education during his regular visits to schools and community groups. More than 3,500 people have benefitted from the program!
